Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof resigned on Tuesday after far-right leader Geert Wilders quit the government coalition. This terrible event shocked European politics. The decision was made because there was no longer a consensus on strict immigration laws. Geert Wilders Leaves the Power He Helped Build
Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) had an important part in building the new government after winning the 2023 federal elections by a significant margin. Wilders departed the coalition anyhow, citing a lack of support for his ten-point asylum agenda. One of his suggestions was to temporarily suspend the acceptance of asylum applicants and the reunification of refugee families. Wilders’ party gained the most seats, but he pledged to support Schoof as a neutral prime minister. Schoof is an experienced former intelligence chief without a political base of his own. That shaky agreement has now collapsed, leaving the Dutch government perplexed only weeks before a crucial NATO summit in The Hague.

The Dutch people have become more split on how the government handles immigration, particularly asylum seekers. Wilders’ ten-point proposal was very stringent, similar to recent measures enacted in Austria and Poland. He stated that the Netherlands must act now or suffer long-term economic and social consequences.
However, other coalition members objected to various aspects of the plan, particularly the proposal to prohibit family reunifications, which opponents claim violates human rights and international conventions. Caroline van der Plas, chairwoman of the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), claimed Wilders was “governing via social media threats” and that his decision to depart was “reckless and irresponsible.”
A Government in Crisis while Europe Watches
This is the second time in two years that the government has fallen apart, following Mark Rutte’s resignation in 2023 due to similar issues. Following his meeting with King Willem-Alexander, Schoof addressed the press in a somber tone, emphasizing the importance of unity in a rapidly changing globe.
Schoof stated, “We are facing major problems at home and abroad.” “Now more than ever, we need to be decisive for the sake of our economy and security.”
There will be a new election later this year, although there is no official date yet. Until then, the country will be ruled by a caretaker administration, which will most likely delay major changes. This timing adds to the confusion, especially since the NATO summit is quickly approaching and the Netherlands plays an important diplomatic role there.

Opposition parties are more energized now that the partnership has disbanded. Jimmy Dijk, the president of the Socialist Party, immediately called for emergency elections, stating, “Now is the time for political change.” It is unknown whether this transition would result in a more centrist government or further division.
